For some, packing a wardrobe to kill for is a must when visiting the French Riviera. Now, imagine being an esteemed guest welcomed to the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, where things are ramped up to a whole new level.

This May, the 77th iteration of the festival kicked off with a megawatt buzz, courtesy of blockbuster premieres and the arrivals of globally renowned stars. Unlike other galas on the same scale as the Cannes Film Festival, with the power to gather A-Listers from all places far and wide, the annual event accredited by the Fédération Internationale des Associations de Producteurs de Films (FIAPF) lives by a strict dress code: black-tie formal. That means full-length gowns for the ladies, and tuxedos for the leading men. Yet, despite its supposedly unyielding dress requirement, the film festival has seen how the most stylishly ingenious stars have manifested red carpet moments designed to be immortalised in the minds of many for years to come.

This year is no different. The red carpet for Yorgos Lanthimos’ Kinds of Kindness premiere saw our May 2024 cover stars Sarocha “Freen” Chankimha and Rebecca “Becky” Patricia Armstrong dressed in gowns by Eman Alajlan, adorned with precious baubles by jeweller Chopard. News of the duo’s highly anticipated arrivals swiftly caught the attention of global fans, with their debut appearances in the South of France becoming an internationally trending topic on X. The same night also introduced the French coastal town to rising star Hunter Schafer, who arrived elegantly dressed in an iridescent Armani Privé gown that received seals of approval from onlookers and netizens at large. To audiences’ delight, Bella Hadid also found her way to Cannes, leaving little to the imagination on the red carpet.

And over at the Emilia Pérez premiere by director Jacques Audiard and Anthony Vacarello’s Saint Laurent Productions, Selena Gomez made her long awaited appearance, dressed by the Maison’s creative director. Other noteworthy moments this year include the gathering of Han So-Hee, Lim Yonna, and more K-Pop stars in the audience for the Western epic Horizon: An American Saga by screenwriter Jon Baird and actor-director Kevin Costner
