Christy Turlington Burns Is Our March 2017 Cover Star!

BAZAAR's Editor-in-Chief Kenneth Goh introduces our new issue dedicated to the celebration of women

That bra strap on the cover said everything to me about this season’s fashion. In bold type, it was like an ode from Christy Turlington Burns to the world. A declaration of one’s passion for a storied 70-year-old French brand. At the same time, it was an ironic nod to the bra-burning days of the ’60s. How apt that the new artistic director for Dior is a woman — the first time in the House’s history.

When I spoke to Maria Grazia Chiuri in Paris the day after her first haute couture show, she was very candid about her take on the brand. Yes, she designs for women first and foremost. No, she doesn’t believe in the “see-now, buy-now” trend. Chiuri has, in just one season, caused a seismic shift in fashion. She sent Dior underwear down the runway that every fashion girl wants to wear out in the streets (Kristina Bazan and Chiara Ferragni can attest to that). She presented her version of the slogan first created by the House’s ex-designer, John Galliano — she shortened his “J’adore Dior” to “J’Adior” — on everyday items from bra straps to t-shirts and even shoe straps. A couture take on pop culture, if you will (Marky Mark in his Calvins comes to mind). She took on women’s rights with bold slogan t-shirts declaring “We Should All Be Feminists,” a reference taken from the essay by Nigerian author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

So it’s fitting that we have Christy Turlington Burns on our cover. She is one of the best women to represent feminism today. From runway Supermodel to woman’s rights campaigner and activist, Turlington Burns speaks of her charity cause, Every Mother Counts, and how she has made a positive impact for over 500,000 women worldwide. In this issue, we also celebrate diverse beauty as seen through Carine Roitfeld’s eyes as she edits the best from the spring/summer runways. And in an ode to Girl Power, ex-editor Sharon Lim pens a piece about her Tinder dates — and how, at her fingertips, she has the power to decide on a mate by swiping left or right. Technology has recharged her love life — and shaken the whole concept of dating in the Millenium. Feminism meets power meets iPhone. Welcome to the 21st century.
