It’s a very strange time in the world right now. As I write my editor’s note, we have witnessed the death of the world’s longest reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth II. She served her country, the Commonwealth and the colonies for over 70 years with grace, style, kindness and empathy which has made her iconic in every way. Having lived in London for the formative years of my life, there’s a part of me that identifies strongly with the Brits. And I certainly felt the Queen’s absence and departure all the way here in Singapore. It took me back to my late granny’s life. Her frequent trips to the UK to visit mum and me were highlights in her long, long life (she passed away five years ago at age 98). And she identified strongly with the Queen despite never having met her. She loved visiting Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle, and frequently boasted to her sister that she “met” the queen. To granny, it was as good as—and that’s what made the queen so accessible to us mere mortals. Turn to page 176 for a pictorial celebration of her life.

Relatability is something that makes superstars and royalty so successful in the public’s eye, especially so if they’re able to engage with the general public—much like tennis legends Serena Williams and Roger Federer, both of whom are retiring from the sport, marking a significant end to a special era. Both stars are poles apart in their playing style, but their long careers and success in such a competitive sport for over two decades certainly makes them super. Tennis is a sport that I grew up playing on the public courts in my local park in the UK. It brought back memories when I watched the Oscar-winning film, King Richard, which charts the life of the Williams family as they found global success despite a humble start playing tennis at their local public courts. I was encouraged to pick up the sport from my parents who still play regularly today. Mum picked up the sport from my late grandpa who used to play on the grass courts at the Singapore Cricket Club. I still play tennis regularly with my cousin weekly and have watched his 21-year-old son (my godson) grow to become a great tennis player, a member of the university team and a very competent coach. There have been so many discussions across the net about who we love in tennis and Federer always comes up tops. He rarely, if ever, lost his temper, was gracious in defeats as he was magnanimous in wins. And he has a lovely effortless style and grace, both on and off the courts.

Although I’ve not met any of these kings and queens, I felt it’s important to salute royalty both on and off court. It’s my tribute to these GOATS. Honour the past and respect the future. I will miss these legends but know that they have all touched me somehow in my life and for that, I’m eternally grateful.
