Here's a hint: they may even find it funnier than you do.

Lily-Rose Depp and The Weeknd

Taking over the coveted primetime spot previously held by Succession, HBO’s The Idol was bound to be widely watched, discussed and dissected. But ever since its debut, the show has attracted more controversy than anything, from continued fallout over a Rolling Stone exposé about trouble behind the scenes to the aftermath of an exodus of key crew members, earning mixed reviews along the way.

For the uninitiated, the show follows the story of an underground cult leader and self-help guru, Tedros (The Weeknd’s Abel Tesfaye) who advises up-and-coming pop star Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp) on her career, bringing her further and further into his orbit in the process. Billed as a darker version of director Sam Levinson's hit show Euphoria, the series has come under fire for its explicit sexual content, among other things.

Yet despite the controversy, comedian and SNL actress Chloe Fineman managed to find the humour in Depp's character, Jocelyn, posting a spot-on impression which parodies the show perfectly.

"My audition for THE IDOL (must have got lost in the mail) @theidol 🚬🚬 (@lilyrose_depp is a GODDESS of talent)," Fineman captioned the clip, imitating the lines, moments and vibes from the first episode. In the video she further pokes fun at the setup of the show, saying that, "Anyway, I met this guy last night, his name is Tedros…he was dressed in a bat cave, but I think he’s gonna, like, change my career."

Adding more humour to the impression, Fineman puffed on four cigarettes at once, wearing a bodysuit, red robe and black bralette, all backwards. She even imitated the asphyxiation scene from the first episode when Tedros helps Jocelyn have an artistic breakthrough.

But instead of taking offence, the show's original stars seemed to find the video hilarious. Depp acknowledged the post publicly, commenting "I’m loling 🤣🤣🤣🤣 ….. and ur makeup looks bomb." The Weeknd, meanwhile, responded with a tweet of his own.

The show’s cast members, especially K-pop sensation Jennie from Blackpink, leave little doubt that the series will continue to generate lots of hype throughout its run, mixed reviews aside. After all, this is a show that has withstood dozens of delays (after being green-lit in November 2021 and pushed back due to "major changes" in April 2022) and come out stronger on the other side. Levinson first became lead director after Amy Seimetz departed from the project, with HBO commenting at the time that "The Idol’s creative team continues to build, refine, and evolve their vision for the show and they have aligned on a new creative direction. The production will be adjusting its cast and crew accordingly to best serve this new approach to the series. We look forward to sharing more information soon."
