Met Gala 2024: Zendaya, Lana Del Rey And More Gothic Glamour On The Green Carpet
This year’s fashion extravaganza in New York City saw A-Listers in all things dark and beautiful taking over the Metropolitan Museum.
At the biggest ball in the fashion calendar this First Monday in May, ‘The Garden of Time’ dress code saw a green carpet taking over the famed steps of the Metropolitan Museum for the very first time. Inspired by the short story of the same name by author J.G. Ballard, the elegiac tale centres on a count desperately trying to delay his inevitable tragedy in the hands of an angry mob by cutting roses from his garden to slow down time. The story explores the topics of the unstoppable passage of time, human mortality, and the fall of the aristocracy—giving us reason to expect red-carpet moments that take inspiration from lavishly decorated green landscapes, dystopia, and something that transcends the message of the hauntingly melancholic nature of fate.

While a number of guests who received the highly coveted invitation to the Met Gala opted for looks with a more expected take on the floral theme, other stars such as Zendaya, Dua Lipa, FKA Twigs and more went down a different route, favouring red-carpet ensembles designed with a gothic twist in varying degrees. Be it monochromatic gowns in shades of black and white, thorny-looking lace, Victorian silhouettes, or statement metallic accoutrements, these stars made the night that much darker—in impeccable style, of course. From archival looks designed by legendary designers the likes of Cristóbal Balenciaga and Alexander McQueen, to shocking and unexpected custom designs by today’s buzziest creative directors helming heritage fashion houses, the museum played host to and welcomed them all as they ascended the steps for the cameras.
