The award, launched by Prince William and The Royal Foundation of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in October 2020, is the most prestigious of its kind in the world. Winners are chosen for their contributions to environmentalism and awarded £1 million to continue their work.

William said he first became interested in the outdoors as a child, when he would play in the garden in Buckingham Palace and climb trees. He said his father, Prince Charles, and paternal grandfather, Prince Philip, also encouraged him to explore nature, as they, too, were always intrigued by wildlife. But it wasn't until he went to Kenya, in his gap year before university, that he said he really got to spend time outside and appreciate the wilderness, guided by a community so different than his, "meeting local people, seeing how they lived with the wildlife."

He said that trying to enter and understand the environmental space these days can be very "overwhelming," because there is just so much going on, so he encourages people to take it step by step.

Like William and his brother, Prince Harry, Nightmare Alley star Blanchett has long made efforts to help keep Earth clean. The actress is an ambassador for the Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF), an organization fighting to keep nature intact and stop human-made pollution.

Meanwhile, Kennedy continues to educate people on the importance of taking care of our planet with his many ventures. He is the managing director of the California Clean Energy Fund, the cofounder of Sungevity (a solar power company in Oakland, California) and Powerhouse (a clean energy innovation firm), and the author of the book Rooftop Revolution: How Solar Power Can Save Our Economy—and Our Planet—from Dirty Energy.
