Taylor Swift has overtaken Adele by breaking YouTube's one-day streaming record with her music video for Look What You Made Me Do.

The 27-year-old Shake It Off singer scored 28 million views in 24 hours, beating Adele's 27 million for Hello, according to the BBC.

Swift's comeback single - believed to be a thinly-veiled dig at Kanye West and Kim Kardashian, among many others - also made a new Spotify record after it was played more than eight million times on the streaming service upon its release last Friday.

The lyrics video - which was released before Swift debuted the full video at Sunday night's MTV VMAs - accrued 19million views on its first day, almost doubling the figure held by previous record-holder, Something Just Like This by The Chainsmokers and Coldplay.

The viral music video is packed full of references to Swift's headline-making life, with nods to former public feuds, scandals and relationships.

Some fans have questioned whether the bath tub scene is a direct reference to Kim Kardashian's robbery in Paris. The reality TV star was held at gun point in a hotel in the French capital, put in a bathtub with duct tap around her mouth and robbed of millions of pounds worth of jewellery.

Others have defended Swift and pointed out that while introducing her song Blank Space a few years ago, she made reference to her persona lounging in a bathtub full of pearls.

Swift's album Reputation will be released in November.
