Actor Zhang Ze Tong is booked and busy. After winning Star Search in 2019, the actor has gone on to play numerous roles in local dramas such as All That Glitters in 2023, Hope Afloat in 2024, and most recently, Emerald Hill. Recognition has come naturally: at yesterday’s Star Awards, the actor clinched the ‘Most Popular Rising Star’ award alongside Tyler Ten and the ‘MyPick! Favourite CP’ with Chantalle Ng, who played his love interest in Hope Afloat.

But apart from the star’s acting chops, his sense of style is one to note, too. Take for example: his red-carpet look at Star Awards 2025, an embellished jacket from Gucci’s Pre-Fall 2025 collection buttoned over a blue collared shirt punctuated with TAG Heuer’s Carrera Chronograph Gold watch. On the intention behind this outfit, Zhang’s stylist, Daryll Alexius Yeo shared: “The vibe was the idea of ‘soft power’ for a leading man. We wanted to show fashion range [as opposed to] his usual traditional suiting. Something… unexpected of him. The Gucci look has hints of romanticism—micro pearls all over, with just the right touch of poetic appeal.”

For Yeo, the standout jacket from the Italian house was an intuitive pick. “When I first saw this outfit, I immediately knew that I wanted Ze Tong to wear this look for the red carpet this year. We added matching micro ear cuffs to echo the embellishments and it just clicked,” the stylist said. “The pearl-studded Gucci jacket is almost like wearable punctuation.”

The enthusiasm for the piece was echoed by Zhang as well. Yeo shared: “There was a moment during the fitting when he tried on the pearl-embellished jacket, looked in the mirror, and just went silent for a second. Then he went, “Wait… I love this.” That’s the magic. That little pause before someone claims a look as their own, it’s my favourite kind of moment as a stylist.”

The duo’s rapport extended to the star’s second look of the night, a monochromatic set in a dusty blue, also from Gucci, which Yeo described as “a lot cooler, calmer” than the more experimental first look. The tailored co-ords were “sculptural and modern”, an effect stemming from the softness of the shade toning down the sharpness that often comes with tailoring.

Of putting Zhang in the look, Yeo said: “It’s not your typical red carpet ‘black-tie’ moment. It’s for the man who’s already made peace with the spotlight.” Here, the stylist defaulted to his preferred style on Zhang, which he tells us is “equal parts masculine and modern, and never boring.”

This phrase seems to describe the actor as well—the contemporary man with undeniable main character energy and an eye for style. Zhang has been known to be outspoken about his opinions when it comes to styling, and yesterday was no different. “Ze Tong’s the kind of person who won’t fuss over what colour a button or cufflink is, but he will care how the whole look feels. It’s essentially about the vibe and how we both feel about it,” Yeo said about their collaboration for Star Awards 2025.

“I’m grateful that Ze Tong has always trusted my stylistic vision since the beginning, and always brings his own instinct to it. That’s what makes styling Ze Tong fun. It’s a dialogue, not a monologue.”
