In a global first, Harper’s BAZAAR Singapore Editor-in-Chief Kenneth Goh lets us in on a Christmas special with a no-holds-barred interview with his mum, Teresa Ooi.
Embracing all things Peranakan, EIC Kenneth Goh shares some heartfelt moments with his mum, Teresa Ooi, in a special mother-son day’s out where they indulge in a spa treatment, a stay-cation at Shangri-La plus some Nyonya delights, while chatting about their unique heritage, the power of bling and all things fashion.
Kenneth fires 8 quick questions to his mum about fashion and beauty:
- What is your first memory of fashion?
Saving my dollars and cents to buy Seventeen magazine, a teen fashion mag.
- What’s your first designer buy and its significance to you?
Buying my first pair of Charles Jourdan shoes―wore them to death…
Beauty is about…
Attitude―of course it also helps if you have flawless skin, a light in your eyes and luscious lips.
Name some beauty tricks that you’ve learnt and used for everyday and some special occasions.
Always wash and blow-dry your hair before an outing; always moisturise your heels― dry, cracked heels are never a good look when wearing sandals; wear dark colours for a slimmer look; wearing over-fitted trousers is not a good look; never go to bed without taking off your makeup; and for that special occasion, accessorise with jewels, the bigger, the better―be bold.
- What are some of your favourite fashion labels?
- I have a soft spot for jackets by Dior; winter coats by YSL, Salvatore Ferragamo and Prada; accessories by Celine, Dior, YSL and Prada; bags by Roger Vivier, Ferragamo and Tod’s and loafers by Gucci.
If you have to wear one designer for the rest of your life, it would be…
Issey Miyake with everyday Uniqlo.
What’s the one single piece of fashion advice you would want to give women?
Never leave home without wearing red lipstick.
What are your fashion do’s and don’ts?
I never show my bra or cleavage. I never wear socks with open-toed shoes. Bling is not only for the evening.
