Good news, theatre buffs! Singapore Repertory Theatre’s ever-popular Shakespeare in the Park series is back for its ninth edition, and this year, it takes on The Bard’s immortal love story: Romeo & Juliet. The tale of the star-crossed lovers has captured the hearts and minds of audiences all over the world, and has been told countless times—whether on stage or in film (we’re looking at you, Leonardo DiCaprio!). This year also marks Shakespeare’s 400th death anniversary, making it the perfect opportunity to remember the most influential wordsmith that ever lived, and the Singapore Repertory Theatre is sparing no effort with the production of this popular play.
“Our production of Romeo & Juliet focuses on the breathless quality of the play, of love tragically cut off before it ever really begins,” said Daniel Slater, Director of Romeo & Juliet. “Set in a modern dystopia, our production presents a heartbreaking tale of forbidden love, fatal choices and passion bigger than life itself. Come to the park to recapture the feeling that never leaves you: first love.”
The young lovers will be portrayed by Thomas Pang (Tribes) and Cheryl Tan (Beauty World and Red Riding Hood), along with theatre veterans with Remesh Panicker, Shane Mardjuki and Daniel Jenkins in other leading roles.
