5 Fashion Labels That Launched Sustainable Collections This Season

This Earth Day we shed the spotlight on our favourite Spring/Summer '21 collections that epitomise the values of upcycling and sustainability.

It's true: Our consumption of fast fashion has a direct negative impact on Mother Earth and contributes to the effects of climate change we are facing now. The good news is, a number of labels have begun to do things differently. From producing high-quality, eco-friendly collections to online platforms giving a voice to those truly making positive changes, here are some fashion brands who are committed to sustainable practices.

ALEXANDER MCQUEEN

Under the creative direction and vision of Sarah Burton, Alexander McQueen's latest Spring/Summer 2021 collection incorporated materials and and prints the brand already had. Burton said: “For both the men’s and women’s collections, I made a decision early on in lockdown only to use fabrics that we already had; print on them, reinvent them, and make them feel new.” Jacquards, silks and laces were upcycled and revived in developing the collection.

COACH

Coach's proposal for championing sustainability for the season includes the use of vegetable-tanned, naturally-dyed leather on bags as well as fabrics that integrate a mixture of recycled materials such as plastic bottles.

The ready-to-wear collection is also crafted from upcycled remnants, and vintage pieces personalised with embellishments and embroidery.

The campaign—dubbed Coach Forever—explores the value of human connection and our environment as seen through the lens of Juergen Teller together with Coach's ambassadors like Kaia Gerber, Megan The Stallion and Kiko Mizuhara.

KENZO

Who says atheleisure can't be eco-friendly? In the case of Kenzo Sport's latest Spring/Summer 2021 collection, they've roped in the creative genius of VOITED, who is the forerunner in designing sustainable and high performance outdoor apparels. Our personal favourite? The new blanket-cape that has been graphically reworked into a monogram, presenting a new K flag and marked with the KENZO Sport signature ‘X’.

LOEWE

Though Loewe's Eye/LOEWE/Nature capsule line is targeted towards men, the vibrant and earthy collection features lots of gender-neutral styles that we think women can rock too.

Central to the theme of the fifth edition of Loewe's ongoing capsule collection is environmental responsibility and how nature is integral to Jonathon Anderson's vision for the Spanish luxury fashion house. Throughout the collection, you'll notice the recurring theme of recycling and upcycling as well as making use of organically-sourced linens and cottons. The designs are also versatile and seasonless so that they can be worn for a long time to come.

In addition, with every product sold from this line, 15 euros will be donated to Fundación Global Nature, and its “A casa for birds” project, which aims to create semi-natural habitats for wildlife species in danger of extinction.

Some highlights of the collection include: Planet-positive affirmations of peace and love with graphics that include slogans like 'the future is bright' and 'together we succeed.' The American label also tapped on Mogli, a Berlin-based singer, songwriter, filmmaker, designer and eco-activist to front the fashion campaign.
