The Reality Of Clothing Through Reduction At LOEWE Spring/Summer 2023

LOEWE SS23

At the LOEWE Spring/Summer 2023 show, a giant red Anthurium stood like a towering creature in the midst of a white hall, as the models emerged from the base of the flower. The red lace leaf is also the recurring motif throughout the collection: covering the whole bust in freshly sprouted corsets, and blooming on bags and sandals, the flower celebrates a fierce femininity. A lyrical collection that saw trapeze coats, jackets and dresses cropped short and swinging with exposed waists, legs and the odd belly button.

Creative Director Jonathan Anderson provided yet another lesson of style and simplicity, stripping off the excesses from garments and rather, honing in on form and shape, which are often whimsical and surreal. Sculptural boning gave garments a given new geometry. Andersons’ signature column knits in soft pastels and pure whites were grounded with shoes made out of hundreds of deflated balloons. Inflated shoes in bold primaries made the feet a statement point of visual contact, while the new season’s bags were played out on a runway of simple, shapely feminine silhouettes that had enough quirk to show the artisanal side of fashion, which Anderson does very well.

Emily Ratajkowski, Charli XCX, Tommy Cash, Dan Levy and Maude Apatow were spotted minutes before the show.
