When I first met our cover star, Apo Nattawin Wattanagitiphat, it was on 9 November 2022, over dinner at a Chinese restaurant in Singapore. I had heard a great deal about this handsome Thai star who played the lead in the boy love (BL) series called KinnPorsche. He was very charming, a little shy and even sang a beautiful rendition of Teresa Teng’s iconic song, “The Moon Represents My Heart”, during dessert! He certainly wowed our table and I could see his star was on the rise. I had invited Apo as our celebrity guest at our annual NewGen event and it was a huge success. Hundreds of fans thronged the event and our show was the key trending hashtag across all social media platforms that November weekend.

The show went viral well beyond the shores of Asia and captivated a global audience. Today, Apo’s appearances at Dior shows in Paris attract thousands of fans, and it’s quite amazing to see how young French teenagers adore him, even if they don’t share the same language. He always acknowledges his fans and never fails to engage them with shouts of “Merci!”. More on this Thai sensation in our special cover shoot on page 107, where he is styled like the late romantic swashbuckler, actor Errol Flynn.

It’s not every day we have a man on our cover. But the interest in male stars has gone beyond a primal desire; audiences are keen to see how men dress up too.

Top male influencer Nic Kaufmann believes there’s a demand for men’s fashion because it’s now the norm on social media. Men’s fashion is also leading the sartorial charge in what we see on the runways. Oversized baggy athleisure clothes (read: Balenciaga), clever tailoring (Bottega Veneta), traditional menswear fabrics (Alexander McQueen) and an overall relaxed take on dressing (The Row) has resulted in everyone stealing from their dad or brother’s wardrobe. Read fashion editor Aaron Kok’s take on this trend on page 116.

While social media is dictating the trends, let’s not relegate what we see on the silver screen to the cutting room. If anything, celebrities touting real fashion in reel time is further amplified on social media platforms and TV stations. What you watch certainly influences what you wear. Read about the key TV shows, the main character movies and, of course, the stars who inform our dressing on page 62.

If you want inspo on how to mix men’s and women’s fashion, and how movies construct our fashion choices, check out creative director Windy Aulia’s lyrical fashion shoot in the Big Apple on page 121. In an homage to Hollywood neo-noir classics, Windy pulls off a slice of Taxi Driver with a touch of Midnight Cowboy to portray a modern day Lolita in western-inspired denims, minis and dresses. ’Nuff said... I’m slipping on my cowboy boots and heading off to a western adventure tout de suite.
