Most of us rely on the versatile white tee as a vital element of our day-to-day wardrobes and, although this is not going to change anytime soon, there is another basic back in town, which looks like it might be set to rule in 2020. The sleeveless white vest, or tank top as those across the Atlantic tend to call it, is slowly making its way back into fashion—and could be just the affordable, accessible new-season update you’ve been looking for.

While it wouldn’t be fair to say that the white vest ever truly went out of style, it has definitely taken a backseat for the past few years, relegated to our laidback Sunday uniforms, rather than taking pride of place in our Friday-night looks. However, that might all be about to change.

On the spring/summer 2020 catwalks, a number of designers subtly brought the white tank top into their collections, including layered under leathers at David Koma, paired with matching sporty shorts at Hermès, given the cut-out treatment at Off-White and made into eveningwear at Dries van Noten and Saint Laurent.

The streets too have seen a white-vest resurgence of late as supermodels Bella Hadid, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Kendall Jenner have proven its style credentials time and time again—and Instagram influencers have adopted the basic back into their wardrobes in a big way too.

How to make the white vest work for you? Invest in a crisp style that will retain its shape—and make sure to keep it looking as clean and white as you can. Look to retro ‘00s street style (from the likes of Jennifer Aniston) for late-night inspiration, accessorise it up as Carrie Bradshaw did, use it as the ultimate layering tool for the office or go full-on off-duty supermodel and team it with denim or leather.

A trans-seasonal and extremely versatile piece, the white vest is an excellent wardrobe addition to make this year, especially if you have grown tired of your T-shirt.
