Burberry’s Holiday 2016 Campaign Tells ‘The Tale Of Thomas Burberry'

In the house’s new film, a starry British cast re-enacts key moments in its founder’s life

Christmas is nigh, which means the airwaves will soon be chock-a-block with moving stories and feel-good sentiment. But the title of this holiday season’s most fashionable campaign may go to Burberry, which commemorates its 160th anniversary with ‘The Tale of Thomas Burberry’, a short film written by Matt Charman and directed by Asif Kapadia. Shot primarily at Oxfordshire’s Shirburn Castle, the film’s production values easily rival that of any prestige costume drama, with the trenches of World War I and 19th century garment workshops brought to life with exacting detail.

Starring the likes of Domhnall Gleeson (as Thomas Burberry himself), Sienna Miller, Dominic West and Lily James, the film recounts Burberry’s invention of the house’s trademark waterproof gabardine, and the adoption of his hard-wearing clothes by the British military as well as polar explorers and pilots.
