Step Into The Artisanal Worlds Of Chanel's Métiers D'Art

The Métiers d'art (or specialised savoir-faire workshops) of Chanel are home to masterful craftsmen and artisans who are guardians of a precious and unique craft. These workshops operate under a business model unlike that of any other fashion houses, working with Chanel while operating independently.

Here, we shine the spotlight on two of the House's specialty ateliers: Maison Lesage and the Maison Lemarié; where inexhaustible inspiration and inventive ideas are translated into extraordinary creations the House is known for, through perfectly mastered craftsmanship and expertise. Join EIC Kenneth Goh as we step into the artisanal worlds of Lesage and Lemarié.

We first take a glimpse inside embroidery atelier Lesage, founded in 1924. Lesage began collaborating with Chanel in 1983 when Karl Lagerfeld started creating clothes for the House, and became a part of the Métiers d’art in 2002. The deft hands of the embroiders not only adorn clothes with sumptuous embroideries and embellishments, they also develop iconic tweeds for Chanel's ready-to-wear and haute couture collections.

The visit continues at Maison Lemarié, one of the last plumassiers remaining in Paris that has been in existence since 1880. Initially dedicated to processing feathers as a means of ornamentation, the atelier subsequently expanded to include the handcrafting of flowers such as the emblematic camellias in organza, chiffon, tulle, leather and velvet. Also known for couture techniques including intricate ruffles, smocking and pleats, the atelier officially joined Chanel's Métiers d’art in 1996, and has since been imagining unique creations for the House.
