Joining the ranks of Gucci, Michael Kors, and Versace, Diane von Furstenberg just became the latest fashion house to announce plans to go fur-free. The brand announced on Tuesday that it has partnered with PETA and the Humane Society of the United States in order to put an end to animal exploitation in the fashion industry.
“It’s time for us to make this change and accept responsibility to ensure that we don’t promote killing animals for the sake of fashion,” DVF’s CEO Sandra Campos wrote in a press release. “We are committed to supporting the shift to a more ethical and sustainable fashion industry by providing the consumer with innovative and sophisticated alternatives.”
The brand behind the iconic retro wrap dress will cease production of fur, exotic skins, mohair, and angora in all of its upcoming collections, kicking off its fur-free initiative at the start of 2019. And per the brand, it’s DVF’s namesake chairwoman who got the ball running.
“I am so excited that technology has provided us a way to feel as glamorous with faux fur,” DVF chairwoman Diane von Furstenberg said in a press release, adding that the decision to go fur-free is part of a larger-scale project to create a more sustainable fashion industry.
Stella McCartney has long been a pioneer in sustainable fashion. All of her collections are ethically sourced and her materials are cruelty-free with the aim of reducing environmental waste. She was one of the first designers to make eco-friendly fashion luxurious – her faux furs have the same plush appeal as the real deal.
Charlotte Simone was inspired to launch her eponymous label by the way Parisienne women manage to style their look around one key accessory. From this her signature Popsicle style was born – a playful reinvention of the scarf. Made using faux fur, the piece has become popular within fashion circles with fans such as Sienna Miller and Olivia Palermo.
Since its inception in 2013, Shrimps has enjoyed an impressive rise to fashion fame. Founded by designer Hannah Weiland, the brand’s 60s-inspired, vibrant and witty styles have attracted fans such as Alexa Chung and Natalie Massenet. There are coats and jackets bound to make you smile.
Not everyone will be familiar with social and eco-conscious brand Parme Marin, although it’s already a firm favourite of Emma Watson, who owns a pair of its signature faux fur sliders. Its aesthetic fuses the detailed lavishness of Marrakech and the minimalism of New York, while its ethos focuses on sourcing natural materials, minimising waste and creating reusable packaging. The label is truly a go-to destination for elegant faux fur accessories and footwear.
