In a move that is a first for luxury fashion brands, Italian House Dolce & Gabbana have announced that their collections will now be offered in sizes up to a UK 22, or an Italian 54. For comparison, most luxury brands offer their clothes up to a UK size 16 – meaning a whole new demographic of women will finally be able to get their hands on beautiful designer clothes that fit them properly.

Midway through 2019, concrete moves like this show that the fashion industry is finally starting to wake up to the inclusivity movement. And we mean genuinely waking up – it’s no longer about tokenism, buzzwords, and short-lived marketing campaigns that are vessels for an empty message. Today, the discerning consumer base demands real action, the kind that directly impacts the amount and variety of things available to you in the market. By extending their size range, D&G is directly reaching out and opening the doors to the plus-size customer who is tired of not seeing herself on the runway or shop windows.

The size range extension begins with the brand’s Pre-Fall collection which is now available online on the brand’s website and includes the fashion House’s classic floral skirts, figure-hugging dresses, and more. This move seems to be in line with their ethos of size-inclusivity, since the brand has been known to cast women of all sizes to walk their runway over the past few years, amongst whom are actor Monica Bellucci, and models Ashley Graham and Tess McMillan. The brand has also announced that they intend to continue working with plus-sized models and cast them in future advertising campaigns and shows, in another nod to size-inclusivity and appreciating beauty and femininity in all sizes.
