From the Best Actress nominees to the many A-list presenters, here's what we'd love the leading ladies to wear.

15 dresses we hope to see on the Oscars red carpet

The Academy Awards is always one of the most glamorous nights on the A-list calendar, with many of the dresses worn guaranteed to go down in fashion history. This season, there are plenty of famous presenters confirmed to attend and more than a few nominees who will undoubtedly pull it out of the bag in the style stakes.

Although it is likely that many of these women will wear custom dresses that have never been seen before, we have rounded up 15 gowns that we would love to see on that red carpet come Sunday.

Wonder Woman's Gal Gadot will be on hand to present at this year's ceremony, where we think she should embrace the slinky and metallic trends she so often favours on the red carpet. This fun, tiered, fringed dress from Dior's most recent couture collection would therefore be a great fit.

Another presenter confirmed is comedy actress Mindy Kaling, who often favours navy hues and metallic tones, which is why we think this floaty, elegant number by Oscar de la Renta would be a fitting, and fashionable, choice.

Margot Robbie has been quite fearless with her fashion choices of late, from her revival of the opera glove in Dries van Noten to her bubble-hem moment in Giambattista Valli. We'd love to see her continue to experiment with more daring looks in this playful Givenchy design for the Oscars, where she's up for her role in Bombshell.

As one of the fashion house's current ambassadors, it seems only natural for Penélope Cruz to wear Chanel couture. Presenting at this year's awards, we can imagine Cruz wearing this shimmering sheer design from the fashion house's most recent couture show.

Who could forget Olivia Colman's custom Prada look at last year's Oscars? (Or her heart-warming Best Actress acceptance speech?) This time, she's presenting – as is customary for the previous year's winners – which is the perfect opportunity to wear a show-stopping suit. We love this statement piece from Alexander McQueen, and we suspect she would too.

It's been a very fashionable 12 months for Zazie Beetz, from her Valentino moment at the Cannes Film Festival to the festive metallic Rodarte dress she wore in the run up to Christmas. We'd love to see the actress (and presenter on the night) continue her run of style success in this extravagant floral gown by Marc Jacobs.

The legendary Kathy Bates is up for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Richard Jewell, so we think this is the perfect excuse for some sparkle. Bates would dazzle on this year's red carpet in this sequinned black blazer by Saint Laurent, worn with classic black suit trousers and a crisp white shirt for a timeless look.

Renée Zellweger has proven her love for one-tone pastels this awards season. The star looked effortless in baby blue Armani for her return to the Golden Globes and was pretty in pink Prada for the recent Baftas. The actress, who is nominated for her lead role in Judy, could continue her colour streak and look ready for spring in this lovely yellow offering by Emilia Wickstead.

Saoirse Ronan is never afraid to push the boundaries on the red carpet, from that bold Gucci moment at last year's Met Gala to the memorable pastel-pink Calvin Klein gown (complete with giant bow) that she wore to the Oscars in 2018. And this year, we're hoping to see the Little Woman star embrace something even more over the top in this voluminous gold Balenciaga gown, which would be right at home on the Academy Awards red carpet. The choice would also make a lovely tribute to the fact that, this summer, the fashion house is returning to the couture schedule after more than 50 years.

Charlize Theron regularly favours sequins and shimmer – and we hope that this year's Oscars will be no different. We'd love to see her in this Zuhair Murad gown, with its flowing skirt that is perfect for bringing drama to the red carpet.

The trouser suit has never been more in style – and this elegant, feminine take from Victoria's Beckham's most recent catwalk collection would be a hit at the Academy Awards on director Greta Gerwig, whose adaptation of Little Women is up for a number of prestigious accolades.

Cynthia Erivo isn't one to shy away from making a statement with her style, which is why we could see her fully embracing this runway look by Valentino, with its bright hue, ruffles and 2020's award season must-have accessory, the opera glove.

Florence Pugh so often chooses something totally unexpected for her biggest red-carpet moments and has been landing on best-dressed lists all year in gowns by everyone from Valentino to Miu Miu, Prada and Dries Van Noten. Next, we'd love to see the Little Women star turn heads in this feathered creation by industry newbie 16Arlington.

Scarlett Johansson – who is nominated in both the supporting and lead-actress categories – has been having fun with block colours this awards season. If her stunning red Vera Wang gown at this year's Golden Globes is anything to go by (or indeed the playful pink Versace dress she wore to the Baftas), we expect she'll go even bigger and brighter at the Oscars on Sunday. This one-shouldered, lime green gown by Elie Saab would be a perfect choice.

Laura Dern – who is nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her work in the wildly popular Marriage Story – always favours sleek red-carpet dresses. We can imagine her stealing the show this year in Valentino's elegant, floor-length, red number. With its open back and high neckline, the dress would make just the subtle statement the actress usually opts for.
