Today, Pirelli unveiled their 2018 calendar in New York City. Photographer Tim Walker was tasked with reimagining the 45th calendar—drawing inspiration from “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland,” which fits perfectly with his penchant for the theatrical.

It’s been three years since the tire company’s iconic calendar moved away from their signature sexed up look. The 2018 calendar continued on it’s new path, trading scantily-clad models for the romantic and imaginative. “Alice has been told so many times”, Tim Walker said, “and I think I wanted to go back to the genesis of the imagination behind Lewis Carroll so that you could tell it from the very beginning again. I wanted to find a different and original angle”.
The renowned photographer, who has shot the calendar once before, assembled an all-black cast of models and entertainers. Whoopi Goldberg, Naomi Campbell, Lupita Nyong’o, Adwoa Aboah, RuPaul, Adut Akech, Alpha Dia, Dijmon Hounsou, Duckie Thot, Slick Woods, Jaha Dukureh, King Owusu, Lil Yachty, Sasha Lane, Thando Hopa, Zoe Bedeaux, Wilson Oryema all play characters in this fantasy.
Set designer Shona Heath help create the stunning sets, while super-stylist Edward Enninful was responsible for the costumes. “It is very important that the story of Alice be told to a new generation. Her adventure in Wonderland resonates with the world we live in today; obstacles we have to overcome and the idea of celebrating difference,” Enninful said.
This is the second time Pirelli has had an all-black calendar. In 1987 Terence Donovan shot five black women including Naomi Campbell who was 16-years-old at the time.
