Exclusive: Lily-Rose Depp Tells Us All About The New Chanel 22

Nothing says chic and sophisticated like a Chanel bag and actress Lily-Rose Depp knows it best. The 22-year-old actress and model stars in the House’s latest campaign that focuses on creative director Virginie Viard’s latest baggage endeavour – the Chanel 22.

The number 22 is an honoured symbol in Chanel's numerology – Nº22 was conceived in 1922, which is the House’s second fragrance after the iconic Nº5.
Designed specifically for the needs of the modern woman, the Chanel 22 checks the boxes of luxury, comfort and functionality. Made from supple and quilted leather, the pillowy bag is available in three sizes and a backpack variant, which is perfect for those on the go.

The interior is fitted with magnetic closure and drawstrings much like that of a purse. A zipped pocket and a removable pouch — held in place by a snap hook — are also included for added storage space.
As for the hardware, we can expect nothing less than the timeless leather and metal interlaced chain handles, the signature “Chanel” metal letters, medallion and the double Cs.
The summer lineup will feature six different colour options – navy, purple, white, black and two shades of pink.

Chanel Ambassador Lily-Rose Depp lets us in on what it was like to be shot by Dutch photographers Inez & Vinoodh for the latest campaign, plus what the Chanel 22 mean to her.
What was it like working with Inez & Vinoodh on this campaign? Tell us about their vision, their collaboration with you and Virginie Viard, the atmosphere in general? Was there a stand-out moment during the shoot?
What’s so special about working with Inez & Vinoodh is that they care about their subject’s essence coming through the photo. They want you to feel like you, to feel confident and as excited as they are about what you’re creating together, and at the same time, they represent Chanel in a way that is very true to Virginie’s incredible vision.

I am so honoured to be part of their [Inez, Vinoodh and Virginie] collaboration. One particular moment I really remember from the shoot is Inez & Vinoodh helping me feel comfortable wearing roller skates, we practised, and I felt like a kid learning with my family!

What do these images say about your lifestyle and everyday life? What do you think Inez & Vinoodh wanted to say about you?
These images are, for me, an ode to the marriage between my identities as a Parisian and a Los Angeleno. I’ve known Inez & Vinoodh for a few years now and so, knowing me, I think they did a beautiful job at creating scenes and scenarios that help my personality shine through. They were also very inspired by Veronica Lake for the shoot, someone who’s inspired me my whole life.
What do you think about the Chanel 22 bag? How does it match or enhance your own style?
The bag is beautiful, timeless and practical! The inside of my bag always looks like I’ve stuffed my entire life in it, and so I love that this bag has space to carry books, notebooks, makeup, whatever your heart desires. I also think it’s so chic that it makes any outfit feel much more special!
Could you describe three different moments or situations in your everyday life when you’d use the Chanel 22 bag?
I feel like I could bring this bag anywhere! To work, to stroll around alone, to sit and read in a park, on a date, even to the beach!
What is it about the Chanel style and allure that appeals to you, inspires you?
The Chanel style has inspired my own style since I was a little girl. The way it exudes strength, femininity, and grace is something that has inspired me not only in terms of style but also in life.
Gabrielle Chanel believed in numbers and launched her second fragrance, N°22, in 1922. In tarot, 22 is one of the Master numbers and holds so much strength it can turn dreams into reality. In numerology, it represents the fulfilment of one’s greatest aspirations... What does the number 22 mean to you?
Reading that actually gives me strength because I’m 22 at the moment and knowing that number holds such special powers makes me feel like I can do anything I set my mind to!
What would be the perfect day/night with your Chanel 22 bag?
I would fill it with everything I need to have the perfect date with myself – books, headphones, a notebook and pen, my makeup essentials, and maybe even a little sweater or scarf for when it gets cold – I’d set out on my own adventure!
What precious things do you carry in your Chanel 22 bag? Tell us one thing that has a special meaning for you.
I always carry good luck charms in my bag – one of them is a little stone, and the other is a two-dollar bill. I tuck them into my little makeup pouch, so they stay nice and safe!
It has often been said that Virginie Viard is a woman designing for women and their needs... Is the Chanel 22 bag a good example of this?
I couldn’t agree more with that statement, and yes, I think this bag is a great example. Virginie has created a bag that will make any outfit look gorgeous and timeless, and she also understands that the person wearing it may need it for lots of different situations, making this bag perfect for every occasion.
