1. Rachel’s red backless skater dress
Rachel (Constance Wu) arrives at her eccentric, nouveau riche friend Peik Lin’s home. Dressed in a red dress, she is set to spend the day with Peik Lin (played by rapper Awkwafina), before heading to a party at her boyfriend’s mansion. Clad in red, the colour that represents love and desire, she stands out in these scenes, a bright spark among an opulent home. The dress was picked out by her mother, who told her what an auspicious colour red is — perfect to meet the boyfriend’s family in. We fell for the backless cut-out detail, and gorgeous shade of the dress.
This satin midi dress with exposed back by Monse (around S$3,009 via Net-a-Porter) totally one-ups what Rachel wore, but references it perfectly with the cut-out. We love the elegant long sleeves, and how it swishes around the legs.
2. Araminta’s liquid gold jumpsuit
Model Araminta Lee (played by Japanese-British actress Sonoya Mizuno) makes a mark in this gold sequin jumpsuit. A colour that symbolizes wealth and power, this is quite the outfit. Araminta is a little bit loud and brash, and it suits her character perfectly as she shepherds friends to her bachelorette party — on a private island, might we add.
Get the look: Be a standout in this metallic sleeveless zip jumpsuit by Tre by Natalie Ratabesi (around S$2,732, via Moda Operandi). A perfect party outfit that will have all eyes on you.
3. Eleanor’s plum floor-length gown
Eleanor Young (Michelle Yeoh) is the mother of Nick Young. She’s all understated elegance in this floor-length plum gown. It conveys the fact that she’s a traditional woman, but one who embodies total sophistication.
Say “yes” to old-world glitz and glamour in this twisted front gown by Erika Cavallini (around S$917, via Farfetch). Pair with opulent jewels, just like Michelle Yeoh.
4. Rachel’s pastel pink summer dress
When meeting the boyfriend’s family — especially the grandmother — hold down any inner skank urges. You should look demure, sweet and rather conservative. This, Rachel does in a feminine pink dress with ruffles and a floral pattern.
Going to meet granny? This floral printed crepe midi dress by Maje (around S$523, via Net-a-Porter) will have her telling you that you look lovely — just like Rachel.
5. Rachel’s blue ruffled ballgown
Rachel attends a swanky wedding in a stunning ruffled organza gown. This Nairobi blue shade reminds us of Cinderella, and of Lupita Nyong’o’s Oscar moment in 2014. Rachel is coming into her own in this scene, where she has to handle her boyfriend’s less-than-supportive mother. The colour of her gown speaks of clarity and calm.
If you are also yearning for a Cinderella moment, then check out this embellished silk-blend organza gown by Zuhair Murad, (around S$19,172, via Net-a-Porter).
