SGFW 2017 Lai Chan

Kicking off Singapore's annual celebrations of local design talents is the Lai Chan Spring/Summer 2018 show. Front-row staples – ranging from doyennes of high society, and a Member of Parliament, to the sartorial set – were all seen sporting the designer's minimalist approach to the traditional qipao, of which the Singaporean designer is famous for. The show opened with a tribute to the plethora of cultures that make up the fabric of the modern Singaporean woman, and her colonial past, in a capsule collection titled The Singapore Dress Reimagined. This epilogue to his main collection boasted intricate beadwork and embroidery on precious silks that were at once nomadic, majestic and sublimely-inclusive – quickly proving that great style transcends the boundaries of cultures; a sentiment which was evident in all of Lai Chan's offerings in tonight's show.
