Putting behind the past and projecting into the future, Salvatore Ferragamo’s eclectic “Future Positive” Fall/Winter 2021 collection draws inspiration from a reimagined utopian world and delivers dramatic silhouettes that are at once youthful yet futuristic in interpretation.
“In fashion, the past exerts a gravity—we are always drawn to it. For this season, I wanted to invert that physics,” says Paul Andrew, who first joined Ferragamo as creative director of its key women’s footwear division in 2016, before being promoted to oversee all categories in 2019.
Discarding all that is old-fashioned, this unconventional collection disrupts the typical traditions and “sees the present through a prism of the future in order to unleash an infinity of fresh perspectives,” he explains.
The new dress code for a utopian world
Inspired by science fiction and cinematic influences such as Gattaca, Until The End Of The World, and The Matrix, this collection not only reinvents the wheel for this season, but sets the stage for many generations to come.
Reimagining the standard contours of today’s uniforms, Andrew proposed new uniforms that is “freed of all associations of class, colour or creed”. His designs are intended to fit into “a utopian future in which diversity and positivity combine to transform our world for the better,” he elaborates.
To present a plethora of possibilities, classic tailoring is remastered with an alternative approach to elegance and utility. To add distinctive attitude, tailoring templates are blended and sequenced with codes drawn from militaria, motorcycles, athletics, scuba and beyond while fearlessly marrying stark palettes with unexpected injections of colour.
Knit bodysuits, fine gauge technical knitwear, draped jersey dresses and utility parkas all make abstract statements in a contrasting collage. Imagine figure-hugging dresses above the knee in a mesh of black and white patches with slimming V-stripes in the front bodice. Or, make a grand entrance with a long knit black coat featuring a striking splash of white tassels from waist to ankle.
Meanwhile, lilac purple pants paired with a bright green cardigan over a buttoned-up blouse with splashes of blue make the perfect ensemble for a crusade in colour.
Timeless must-have accessories
True to its theme, the “Future Positive” collection also features gorgeous bags and shoes with a modern twist. Enriched with vibrant colours and luminous finishings, step into the future in style with these hot picks:
