Since the launch of his label in 1999, Malaysian designer Khoon Hooi has been the go-to designer in this part of the world for well-made, romantic frocks that encourage women to fully embrace their femininity. Hit by an unstoppable wave of inspiration as he traversed the grounds of Parc Monceau in Paris, Hooi's latest fall/winter collection translates the beauty of ornate gates and nature into breathtaking brocade coats and dresses.

Why Parc Monceau?

I was there last fall and walking down the lake everything around me took my breath away. Thousands and thousands of images flashed through my mind. I quickly took out a paper and pen from my bag and started sketching; it was a momentary process of designing. So, you can see the trees, the skies, the leaves, the lake and every other mesmerizing scenes in Parc Monceau from my Fall 2015 collection, named 'A Walk in the Parc'. This collection is one of my favorite because it is a tribute to the beauty of my favorite season—autumn.

Are you a romanticist or realist at heart?

Realist.

Whats the best thing you've heard about your work?

When women tell me: “I feel confident when I'm wearing your brand.”

Do you feel that being an Asian designer is a disadvantage in the industry?

Not at all. I'd say that what speaks for you in the industry is your work and personality. The industry is very open minded, so they tend to accept more of who you are easily.

What more can be done to support Asian designers?

Exposures and fundings. I think the lack of these are the main problems most designers are facing. It's great to have more interesting reality shows like Project Runway or international competitions for Asian designers to be recognized internationally.

What should young designers look out for?

Fashion is a business. You have to know who your customer is and who you are dressing. Work for people, gain experience. College education is important, but it only teaches you the basics. You learn more from those who are already working in the industry. It is a great platform to begin with, especially for those who aspire to start their own brands later.

What are your plans for the brand for the next 10 years?

My second line is coming out real soon. I've received many positive feedback over the years but there is always some form of resistance as the price points [of my main line] is a tad too high for those who admire my work. So, my second line is priced more affordable. I'm focusing more on daily wear so the designs are more sleek and wearable.

Has fashion changed you on a personal front?

The world of fashion has changed a great deal but my personality, work ethic and social life have not changed much. My only wish is that I have more time to do more!
