Haute Couture Fashion Week: 10 Best Looks From Chanel Spring 2020

Virginie Viard sampled from the cloister garden of Aubazine Abbey, just as Coco Chanel did throughout her life

For Chanel couture spring/summer 2020, Virginie Viard recreated inside the Grand Palais, the cloister garden of Aubazine Abbey, where Coco Chanel lived 6 years of her youth. It was in its austere confines, surrounded by schoolgirl uniforms and unadorned daily rituals, that the Chanel house codes were beginning to take form. And so this season’s collection sampled from that world just as Chanel did throughout her life. We see this in the ankle length white socks peeping between tweed hems and black loafers, the long line silhouettes bringing to mind religious habits, even the crisp linen that hung on washing lines surrounding the runway. However, these sober themes were subverted by the femininity and sensuality that Viard has brought to the house of Chanel.
