If you wear clothing tailored specifically to your body, not only will it help your outfit to look more expensive, but it will help you to look taller. This is particularly important when you're petite, as clothes are more often than not too long, so it really is worth getting to know a good tailor.

It's an obvious one. If you're dressed from head to toe in one colour, you won't be breaking up your body and will inevitably look taller than if you chop yourself in two by wearing more than one hue.

This is especially important when it comes to wearing slightly longer hemlines, including midi and pencil skirts. It will help create the illusion that the middle part of your body is much longer than it really is.

While you may not feel comfortable walking around in a tiny mini skirt, don't be afraid to embrace a hemline that is a little shorter than you might usually go for. Your legs will inevitably look longer than if you pick a dress or skirt that falls below your knees.

Just like with showing off your pins, revealing as much of your arms as possible can also help to make you look taller. Take your cue from 5'3" Rooney Mara whose sleeveless ensemble has her looking the same height as Gisele Bundchen.

They may have fallen out of favour with some of the high-fashion pack, but there's a reason the nude court shoe is still so popular with the masses. They have an undeniable leg-lengthening effect and, if styled right a la Selena Gomez, they can look remarkably chic.

If you wear a crop top with your high-waisted trousers and skirts, it will help to accentuate this illusion even further. Show off just a slither of skin though.

They will make your feet look longer, which helps to create the illusion that your legs are longer too. The same goes for pointed flats.

We're not saying you have to wear bodycon dresses to look tall, but wearing oversized, billowing clothing will accentuate how small you are. So, even if you want to wear a loose-fitted dress, just makes sure it at least nips in at the waist.

Because you're small, carrying around a big bag will make you look even smaller. So make like Kate Bosworth and invest in a small box bag instead of something oversized (and just be stricter with your essentials).

Just like with your hemlines when it comes to skirts and dresses, the same can be said for trousers and jeans. If you show off a bit of ankle, it will give the illusion that your legs are too long for the trousers and you will immediately add a few inches to your height.

It helps make your neck look longer, which in turn will make your whole body look longer.

Unfortunately, knee-high boots can be one of the most unflattering lengths for petite body types because they cut legs in half. Instead, opt for a shorter ankle length, which won't have the same leg-shortening effect.

As Scarlett Johansson proves, a cropped haircut will make your neck (and therefore your whole body) look longer and taller. If you're not feeling brave enough for this though, an elegant updo will have a similar effect.

Although wearing a pair of cropped trousers will have a lengthening effect, if you wear a pair of high-waisted, wide-leg trousers, make sure they fall all the way to the floor. This will make it seem like your legs go on for much longer than they actually do (plus, this can disguise the five-inch heels you are wearing underneath).
