Why Kamala Harris, Michelle Obama, And Hillary Clinton All Wore Purple To The Inauguration
There was a special meaning behind all three women's decision to wear the hue.
Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, former First Lady Michelle Obama, and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton have long sent symbolic messages through their wardrobes. However, on the day of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris's inauguration, the three powerful women made a sartorial statement, together.

As all three women made their way to the Capitol Building ahead of today's swearing-in ceremony, they each showcased a look in a varying shade of purple. The choice for all three women to wear the shade—which is a literal mix of the political party colors, red and blue—may have indeed been intentional, considering the hue's meaning to evoke a sense of solidarity, bipartisanship, and unity, according to The Hill.
For her history-making moment, Harris wore a matching shift dress and overcoat by the young, Black, and beloved fashion designer Christopher John Rogers, which she paired with leather gloves and heeled pumps.
Clinton wore her signature pantsuit in a monochrome fashion, including a blazer, trousers, a matching ruffled scarf, and a darker-hued overcoat.

Obama opted for a plum hue for her ensemble and stunned while wearing a turtleneck, wide-leg pants, and a matching cinched belt by Sergio Hudson, another Black American designer who Obama has worn previously.
The color purple holds extra-special meaning for the new vice president. Harris often wore the hue during her campaign for the presidency back in 2019 to honor Shirley Chisholm, who also often wore purple during her history-making campaign as the first Black woman to run for president, inspiring Harris's career.
