Kamala Harris continues her streak of highlighting independent American designers. Today, the new vice president of the United States attended the presidential inaugural prayer service—virtually held in the State Dining Room of the White House—wearing an ensemble by designer Prabal Gurung, which she accessorized with a Tahitian black pearl necklace.

The sleek look consisted of a garnet-hued double-faced wool crepe dress with a matching coat. Both pieces were hand-tailored in Gurung’s atelier in New York.

“Honoured, humbled, and forever grateful,” wrote Gurung on his Instagram. “It is nearly impossible to truly sum up the magnitude of this moment for me. To see Vice President @kamalaharris wearing our designs this morning, just one day after being sworn in as the first ever female, Black, and South Asian American Vice President of the United States of America, is my American Dream coming true all over again.”

Gurung, who was born in Singapore and raised in Nepal and India, founded his eponymous label in 2009. Throughout the years, the designer has consistently presented collections filled with vibrant colors and prints that speak to his diverse upbringing on streamlined silhouettes. He has attracted a distinguished fan base along the way, including former First Lady Michelle Obama, Anne Hathaway, and the Duchess of Cambridge. Dressing Harris, however, hit closer to home.

“I see @Kamalaharris in all her strength and grace, the child of an immigrant like myself, and I am reminded of the potential of this country,” Gurung continued. “The power to make dreams come true not just for a select few, but for everyone. I am reminded of my mother, sisters, and nieces who can now look to the highest office in the country and see themselves represented. They can see their dreams are possible.”

Harris’s ensemble at the State Dining Room follows other jewel-toned outfits by emerging designers, which she wore on Inauguration Day: an amethyst dress and coat by Christopher John Rogers for the swearing-in ceremony at the Capitol Building, and an onyx-hued silk cocktail dress and ankle-grazing tuxedo overcoat by Sergio Hudson for the virtual inauguration concert held later in the evening. All the designers presumably share Gurung’s sentiment of seeing their designs on the new vice president.

“I feel my hope renewed,” concluded Gurung. “Today is a new day, one that holds immense hope and promise as we unite as a country behind President @joebiden and Vice President @kamalaharris, and forge ahead towards a more just and equitable future.”
