Fall is upon us. It is also the last collection shown live during fashion week earlier this year, where thousands of people were seated in grandiose spaces viewing garments sent down the runways. With the pandemic still going on, fashion shows are now smaller in scale with strict social distancing protocols in place. On the flip side, everyone now gets a front row seat to view these fabulous collections thanks to digital fashion shows, marking a glorious albeit challenging path in fashion's new trajectory.

Black shaped up to be the colour of the season, but think beyond your basic LBDs. Against this blank canvas of a colour, designers experimented with dramatic silhouettes—see the winged tuxedo dress at Alexander McQueen and the gargantuan hats at Givenchy. Otherwise, they elevated the hue with intensive craftsmanship, as with the bustier of cut leather rosettes at Valentino, and the elaborate beading and fringing at Prada.

After years of sensible little heels and sturdy boots, the appetite for showstopping shoes is back and nothing makes a statement like the power platform. It was a key component of CELINE’s sultry Left Bank chic while at Rochas, pastel-hued versions in velvet added to the romantic flair of the collection. Meanwhile, at Rick Owens and Dries Van Noten, platform boots came laden with rock-star glamour. These shoes are made for stomping.

Cardigans are a wardrobe staple. And for fall winter 2020, it's reimagined with oversized silhouettes, offering a looks that's more louche—perfect for nights to Netflix and chill sessions. Take Gucci for example. Creative director Alessandro Michele rendered his version with patchwork, while Ferragamo and DSQUARED dreamed up contemporary cool grungier versions. Meanwhile at Hermès, the humble piece of clothing comes in luxuriously soft cashmere.

FOR OUR TROPICAL CLIMATE

Fall winter collections are traditionally for cooler climates like Paris and Milan, unlike Singapore, where it's perpetually warm and humid. That said, we do experience a wet season, which gives us a much needed respite from the heat, and the opportunity to wear a lightweight cardigan or parka.

We also spend most of our time in air-conditioned environments—whether we're in the office, at the mall or in a restaurant. So the lighter pieces from the fall winter collections are still wearable here. That said, we can pick and choose elements from the collections to add to our outfits—be it colours, patterns or silhouettes—so it's all about getting the look in tropical-friendly alternatives.
