Athleisure, bodycon dresses with Versace's signature sexiness

"Sportswear is the future of fashion," Donatella Versace wrote in hr show notes, and her goal for spring was how to make luxurious and different. So how about translating one of her signature black suits with leggings and Teva-like platforms? It was smart, sexy and fresh. And bodycon dresses and skintight suits looked elevated with artful swoops of colour cutting through them.

Versace came up with alluring ways to push sport, from parachute material transformed into colour blocked jogger pants and jackets and, less more unexpectedly, as saucy ruched dresses with thigh-high slits. Elsewhere car racing checks and colours took on cooler proportions when re-imagined as little leather jacket-and-mini combos or a cropped sweater and pencil skirt.

Ribbed jersey was transformed into terrific pleated sweaters and swingy skirts in pastel and neutral mixes and tons of colourful snug knits. The weight of jersey made everything flattering.

But lean and skintight wasn't Versace's only game. Fluid skirts spliced with colour blocks and drawstring dresses felt like a new, cool casual direction for the designer. Especially when she added ribbon embellishment to everything. It was Versace's version of crafty.

And yes, there were the va va voom looks, the slinky skirts and scuba-like tops with insets of sequins and glittering mesh. It felt right in step with the sports-driven theme, and were a strong ending to a great show.
