If there's a designer who has always been an advocate of subversion, Miuccia Prada would be it. So it's no wonder that when it came to restaging the Miu Miu Croisière 2019 show, first held in the Hotel Regina in Paris, Mrs Prada and her team looked to the Waldorf Astoria on the Bund—in particular, the part of the historic hotel that was once home to one of the premier gentlemen’s clubs in Shanghai.

Recreating the glory of '30s and '40s Shanghai with the help of art director Tu Nan, who recently won Best Production Design at the Asian Film Awards, the space was transformed into an intimate salon. “I’m very inspired by the world of the late Qing period,” said Tu, “transposing a historic way of life into modern day, letting it mingle with the creations of Miu Miu.”

As guests such as Yang Chaoyue, Zhang Yuqi and Chloe Maayan nestled on antique Chinese couches and beds, the show opened with Juliette Lewis in a satin and ostrich feather dress, followed by Chinese supermodel, Du Juan, in a rhinestone-studded gown over a striped knit top. Interspersed among models from the original showing were China’s leading ladies of the silver screen, a diverse cast of veterans and rising stars alike, including Kara Wai, Wen Qi, Dong Jie and Chun Xia. Gwendoline Christie, who also took to the runway in Paris, closed the show. The looks were as eclectic—from sheer babydoll dresses to psychedelic animal prints, from oversized cardigans to the briefest of hot pants, the Miu Miu woman's devil-may-care, I'll-wear-whatever-I-want attitude came through perfectly.

Capped off by an after-party featuring performances by rapper-singers Kilo Kish and IAMDDB, and a set by DJ/It Girl Peggy Gou, there’s no doubt the night was a triumphant subversion, if there ever was one.
