Ruffles with an edge. Rodarte sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy managed to come up with a way to make this sweet frill something slightly sinister in black leather and sequins and lace. It was a main message in their fall collection, which was inspired by the cafe where Martin Scorsese sat while writing The Godfather.
The collection was a cross-section of both the film and the denizens of the coffee shop. A while intersection of real and reel life that culminated in a twisted fairy tale presentation of beasts (there was a lot of fur and hair) and babes (both the virginal kind and the not-so).
A bride came out in tiers of white lace, her blackened lips the only sign of bad things to come (in the movie). And what followed was a parade of Italian-esque widows in black lace with golden leaf headpieces.
But as the movie explored the ties between new and old country, and the writing process exercised fact from fiction, the duo wove in tapestry prints (all edged in lacy ruffles) done in trim suits among the colored fur jackets and aggressive leather coats and pants.
The Mulleavys consistently move in cinematic circles, their flair for the dramatic a perfect match for all things movie—whether you are a movie star or just want to dress like one.
