New York Fashion Week: 10 Best Looks From Tommy Hilfiger Fall 2016

All the best looks from NYFW FW16

Tommy Hilfiger loves a theme, and a nautical one fits right into his Americana roots. As editors and buyers filed into their ship deck benches, aboard a stage that looked just like...a Titanic-sized ocean liner, the models paraded out in retro-tinged printed dresses with a soupçon of princess grunge styling.

Everything sailor was seaworthy here. Sailor stripes, blue and white, admiral's cords used as bootie laces, anchor prints and t-shirts with Popeye-like tattoo prints, naval pin-up girls appliqued on sweater sleeves and various knots used to detail chokers. No idea was tossed overboard.

Gigi Hadid easily captured the siren of the sea award in an adorable hot pant worn with a sheer white blouse detailed with admiral coils. The Courtney Love tiara couldn't mess it up, though. Tommy girls can talk the grunge talk, but they're just too all-American.

There was breadth here, for sure, from the cosy fisherman sweaters and snug knits to the lineup of pajama-style pants and shorts in sweet soft colours. Hilfiger showed a deep lineup of coats, too, from short satin bombers to an armada of admiral coats with military detailing. The snorkel parka got a girly update here, too, in a pale satin finish.

Hilfiger's shows bring a sense of fun and "what will he do this time" to Fashion Week. While his show antics may have been overshadowed by his announcement earlier that he will be embracing the see now/wear now model, that's good news for the girls out there ready to dive into his silky retro dresses and sailor pants.
