The Chanel woman this season is living the Californian dream. For her Cruise 2024 collection, Virginie Viard looked to Los Angeles for inspiration—referencing both its free spirits and screen sirens. Her propositions ranged from lace dresses in the ombré colours of LA’s legendary sunsets to red carpet-worthy gowns adorned with feathers and crystals. In between, there were painted jeans and embroidered knits, sequined suits and leather joggers, skateboards and star-shaped bags.

First, there were rhinestone-encrusted bodysuits and swimsuits, which brought to mind Jane Fonda’s Jazzercise videos, complete with big, blown-out hair and scrunched-up leg warmers.

Then came Lurex polo shirts worn with bikini bottoms, and spangled jackets paired with the hottest hot pants.

On the other end of the spectrum were languid pyjama suits—in terry cloth for the ladies who lunch, and in sequins for the dancefloor divas. Last but certainly not least, the House’s signature tweed has been rendered in pastels and micro-mini proportions for the Paris Hilton’s of the world.
