It’s been almost five decades since the creation of Ferragamo’s iconic Vara pumps, and it still remains one of the best-selling items from the Italian luxury house.

Designed in 1978 by Salvatore Ferragamo’s eldest daughter Fiamma for a generation of modern women on-the-go seeking elegance and comfort in their everyday footwear, the original Vara pumps featured a low heel and rounded toe.

A small oval decoration, as well as a bow made from a grosgrain scrap found in the atelier, was added atop the toe cap to the prototype. While the final bow was meant to be in leather, a miscommunication resulted in it remaining in grosgrain, anchored by a metal plaque engraved with the brand’s logo. This happy mistake was the start of Ferragamo’s signature ornamental detail, which has been a key feature on its accessories.
