When Christian Louboutin announced Jaden Smith as the maison’s first men’s creative director, it felt less like a left turn and more like a natural next step. Smith, 27, joins at a moment when heritage houses are rethinking who gets to steer their aesthetic, and appointing an atelier-trained designer can sometimes not feel sufficient.

Today, such a role demands someone who can step confidently between creative direction and cultural conversation.

Together, Smith and Louboutin will work on four annual collections, spanning the categories of men’s shoes, leather goods and accessories, alongside campaigns and experiences. Louboutin will remain firmly at the helm, but Smith’s task is to bring new rhythm to a line already known for its flourish.

Finding His Footing

Smith has long built a style of his own that resists definition, whether it be baggy denim tucked into combat boots as an outfit, sporting a three-dimensional castle headpiece at the 2025 Grammys, or even carrying his freshly shorn locs as an accessory on the 2017 Met Gala carpet.

Since co-founding MSFTSrep, a creative collective and clothing brand with his sister, Willow, in 2012, Smith has treated fashion as a visual experiment, building a personal aesthetic on contrasts: soft and sharp, classic and strange, masculine and feminine. If anyone was primed to step into Louboutin’s orbit, it was him.

The two first met in 2019 during a chance encounter. “When I first met Jaden, I saw in him a natural fit for the Maison,” Louboutin recalls in a press statement. “His world is rich and multidimensional, his style and cultural sensibility are inspiring, and his curiosity and openness are remarkable. I felt that with his creative direction, our men’s collection would evolve in an exciting and dynamic way. He feels like the perfect addition to our creative team, and I am truly looking forward to having fun working with him on our men’s collections.”

A New Stride Forward

For Louboutin, who introduced the men’s line in 2011, fun has always been part of the equation. The collection itself began with two differing stories: one involving a French woman who commissioned a pair of size 13½ shoes that she never wore, passing them to her husband instead. The other story revolves around musician Mika, who allegedly commissioned a full suite of performance shoes for his tour.

From then, the men’s line grew into a celebrity favourite, attracting everybody from Zayn Malik and John Legend, to David Beckham and Tom Holland.

For Smith, it’s not about filling Louboutin’s shoes but walking on his own path. “Merging my vision with Christian’s comes quite naturally because we see the world in a very similar way,” he says. “It isn’t just a title—it’s a creative home. Christian has given me a place to explore, to learn, and to create freely. His legacy is built on hard work and joy, and I want to carry that forward.”

The first step will be an avant-première capsule, launching in January in select boutiques and online, before the official runway debut at Men’s fall/winter 2026 Paris Fashion Week. For a brand built on the idea of red soles leaving a trail, Smith’s appointment feels like a stride into new territory and shaking up what we’ll see on pavements.
