An Exclusive Look At LOEWE Paula's Ibiza 2021 Collection

It’s what summer time daydreams are all about.

The LOEWE Paula’s Ibiza capsule collection is creative director Jonathan Anderson’s love letter to the sun-bathed Mediterranean island he grew up vacationing at. Evoking a sense of escapism and an unapologetically carefree state of mind, the Summer 2021 series is perhaps the best one yet.

“I’m after that vibrant zing of sunny Balearic effortlessness, channelled through uncomplicated pieces of clothing and accessories that are as easy to wear as they are craft-led, lit by the touch of the hand,” says Anderson in a press statement.

The island boutique was originally founded by Armin Heinemann and Stuart Rudnick in Ibiza in the 1970s and has now evolved into a full fledge brand offering both womenswear and menswear in collaboration with Loewe. The result? A series of uncomplicated, relaxed pieces of clothing and accessories—think deconstructed blazers for men, and a range of dresses, tops, kaftans and trousers for women in crochet, faded treatments, loose ruffles and textures—which makes for an alternate way of dressing for summer holidays. As Anderson puts it: “Letting go is, after all, a way of being, and the beach is both a place and an attitude, I believe.”

Together with Heinemann and Rudnick, Anderson play up relaxed staples such as dresses, drawstring shorts and loose trousers featuring an amusing take on archive prints of parrots, doves and crocuses and a prismatic reimagination of the LOEWE logo. Faded treatments are also given to jackets to simulate sun-induced patina. All the garments in this collection have a loose, asymmetrical fit because in Anderson’s guide to summer living, “effortlessness is key”.

This idea of playfulness and mixing-and-matching can also be seen in the accessories collection—canvas fisherman hats, goggle-like sunglass and woven bags in natural fibres, for instance. In terms of footwear, think soft suede moccasin boots; canvas espadrilles with leather Anagram; calf leather sandals; chunky sandals and sneakers.

Like all of Anderson’s creations, craftsmanship is at the heart of the LOEWE Paula's Ibiza collection. The Anagram baskets in Iraca Palm (a type of leaf) are woven in Colombia by female artisans who are part of the Corporación Oficio y Arte NGO—an artisanal collective that allows the craftswomen to be financially independent and educate their children. Their basket weaves are quintessential to LOEWE’s leather savoir-faire. Other playful notes include: Ruffles interpreted as raffia on the Balloon and Pochette bags and fruit-inspired baskets, pochettes and coin purses, also in Iraca Palm.
