New York Fashion Week: 10 Best Looks From Altuzarra Spring 2017

Joseph Altuzarra is a child of pop culture. He’s professed an admiration for movies from the Golden Age, and a recent show reminder on Instragram was done in the style of hit Netflix throw-back show “Stranger Things,” which is set in the 80s. His latest spring collection found its footing in David Lynch’s 1990 flick Wild at Heart, but it was rooted firmly in the modern silhouettes and sexy-pretty separates that have made Altuzarra a sensation.

It wasn’t necessarily Laura Dern’s character in Wild at Heart that inspired him — though there were riffs of her in the red strappy sandals several models wore. But rather it was Nic Cage’s demonstrative python jacket. In the movie, it felt a little sleazy. On the runway, it was nothing but sophisticated chic as dress shirts, trenches and red-trimmed ruffled dresses.

And perhaps there were shades of Twin Peaks in the cinch-waisted pencil skirts with knits tucked in, ladylike 50s style. His florals were inspired by Erwan Fortin’s luscious photographs of rare flowers.

The collection was packed with the slim-to-snug tops and skirts that his fans love, like a light blue striped knit skirt that flared gently, charming patterned sweaters that will find purchase in fall-winter-spring wardrobes and will never look dated, or in pant suits that, true to form, were pulled in tight with wide leather belts.

The shoes and metallic bags will surely fly off the shelves — they bring back a delicacy and femininity in dressing. And oh, femininity is something Altuzarra understands how to do. Just see the ending dresses in pineapple print, python motif and florals. Long gowns layered in gentle ruffles and spaghetti straps were powerfully beautiful.
