Tommy Hilfiger made the move to see now/buy now seamlessly. When presented with how to show his Fall 2016 collection twice — once last February and again now to kick off buying it a ce moment, he decided to add a capsule collection with mega-watt social media star Gigi Hadid before the fall reprise. Oh, and he took over South Street pier to do it all carnival-style. Complete with a ferris wheel begging to be Snapchatted and Instagrammed.
The Tommy X Gigi lineup felt like pure Tommy, with Gigi opening and closing the show. There were sailor pants and navy stripes, rocker leather pants and Sgt. Pepper jackets, mini denim skirts and oversized varsity sweaters. Textbook Tommy.
Sheer printed chiffon walked in a tunic, a boho gown and a mini frock, accented with a fringed bandana. It felt like Hilfiger and Hadid — who, let's face it, was tapped to be the face of the campaign and takeover social media more than actually design — chose all of the brand's signature moves and created a mashup dance. And it worked.
Hilfiger can be considered one of the forefather's of Americana and tapping into that urban-sporty vibe that made him successful decades ago. The key here is that his clothes are sporty and street, but they're not threatening or aggressive. Hilfiger still believes in the ideal of red, white and blue, Old Glory, the stars and stripes. All of it. And if clothes could cheerlead for a country, this collection is the captain of the squad.
As over-the-top as some of it was, including the carnival which will run through the next day for the public, there were pieces that girls with a certain level of ennui to maintain will go for the satin bombers, black leather and military coats. That said, when the country is hurtling towards its most contentious presidential election ever, and our international cred is running low, some rah-rah-America feels like a much-needed pick-me-up.
