Raf Simons made his debut yesterday in New York, and, going by the reactions on social media, he did not disappoint. With a front row chock-full of stars — Kate Bosworth, Brooke Shields, Naomie Harris, Millie Bobby Brown and A$AP Rocky, to mention a few — and fashion industry heavyweights, it was a clear sign of Simons’ incredible reputation in the industry.
Presenting his collection within a total-room art installation by artist Sterling Ruby (one of Simons’ favourite collaborators), that interpreted the theme of America, Simons sent out new iterations that played on workwear. Think: utilitarian-inspired, denim, references to the Wild West, tailoring and… plastic wrap? Yes, Simons wrapped feathers, florals and frocks in the protective material, but managed to make it look effortlessly cool at the same time.
“It reflects the environment,” Simons said in his show notes. “All these different people with different styles and dress codes… It is the coming together of different characters and different individuals, just like America itself. It is the unique beauty and emotion of America.”
