New York Fashion Week: 10 Best Looks From Gabriela Hearst FW17
Gabriela Hearst brought an effortless glamour — by way of the Seventies — to her Fall 2017 collection

Gabriela Hearst has quietly built an understated yet strong and loyal (and quite large) fanbase in just a few seasons. Women respond to her clothes, which can be described much the same way: understated, strong, etc. Fall was right in step, adding in vibrant colour.
Hearst got right down to business with a bevy of double breasted suits, whether a bright homage to the Seventies (the good Saint Laurent kind) or tapered looks in men's wear checks and amplified plaids.
Mixed in among the tailored pieces were lovely cozy knits — sweater dresses, extended cardigans, etc. — that kept in line with the long, lean silhouette Hearst focused on throughout. Her velvet and silk gowns fell in the same soft drape as her knits, some with tonal cowgirl fringe, a nod to her South American rancher roots.
The highlight was the coats and jackets, of which Hearst wanted to offer options. An animal car coat topping matching pants stood out, while cashmere and treated cotton trenches came out in camel cashmere, soft pink and piped pale blue. There were even looser robe-like shapes with a casual throw-on-and-go appeal.
Evening was about effortless glamour. Nothing fussy or too involved. Velvet continues to make its mark and here, it black and navy velvet was peppered with star-like pearls or or worn over a sheer turtleneck. A neat way to style it for a modern woman.
