Welcome to the jungle. Everything about Olivier Rousteing's spring Balmain presentation was a study in how to live the lush life—from the verdant greenery of the hanging plants and runway to the abundant curves of his models.
The strict military vibe of past seasons gave way to exotics and knits, both more manageable concepts for women who want to tap into the rarified Balmain world but can't pull off the sexy-bot look. Here, Rousteing pulled off a hat-trick of sorts. How does a woman look both totally covered up and sizzling? Throw on sweeping, fluid layers that offer teases of leg, hip, waist or shoulder.
Liquid jerseys in earth browns and moss gave way to python print and leather in vibrant blue, green and red. Silhouettes alternated—straight tailored trousers then skin-tight leggings; roomy cardigan then peek-shouldered, cinched shoulder; clingy layers followed by structure.
Much like a wild ride through the Amazon jungles must be an exhilarating and relentless adventure, so too was the Balmain runway. Out they came—nearly 80 of them—in multicolored striped knits, sinuous metallic Lurex, floating sheers and graphic patterns and cut-outs.
The metallic knits that closed the show were stunners, even if dazzling Lurex isn't your vibe. Slinky Seventies-style siren and draped dresses walked alongside gowns with graphic paneling and multi-metallic patterns. It was heady, disco, wild and as always, beyond sexy.
