Message received: black patent is a trend unto itself this fall. Some of the best was seen at Isabel Marant where the design darling did her best rendition of totally '80s fashion. Only cooler, naturally. Her flashback touched upon a lot of '80s—the stodgy, conservatism and balls-out rock/punk scene. And when she piled it all in one look—like those gimme-now argyle cardigans thrown over liquid-slick patent pants—it was enough to tempt even the most die-hard '80s-haters to rethink their stance.
Dresses, blouses and minis came out in men's wear-inspired checks, plaids and the like, but were then puffed at the shoulder, cinched at the waist and hemmed mid-thigh. And let's have a moment for those pointy-toed booties which brought a whiff of nostalgia to anyone who loved Duckie from Pretty in Pink. Marant respun them in leopard and zebra with tons of straps.
The coats, in oversized proportions and men's materials, could work for any mood. here, they were a foil to the party happening. All bets were off. A chunky sweater could be tucked into a patent leather mini detailed with a prom-style bow, while Marant's signature ruffle-and-lace blouses topped zipped minis, softening a Joan Jett vibe.
Even her most reined-in looks—a draped check dress, a trench and a black pant suit—were dipped in the '80s redux thanks to wide cinched belts and those zippy shoes.
But as mentioned, this was a party. And for those moments, Marant delivered shiny zebra, sheer feminine blouses punked up with chains and attitude, one-shouldered ruched jumpsuits and tons more of that patent leather.
