Hedi Slimane hits the sweet spot between Gen Z cool and timeless French chic.

Hedi Slimane’s fall/winter 2021 collection for CELINE, Parade, was a continuation of the Monaco story he told last season—the same nonchalance, the same consideration for the breadth of a full wardrobe, but this time around that formula has been refined. There was also a polish and a sense of glamour here that Slimane fans will find familiar.

The designer demonstrated that he hasn’t abandoned the codes he established in those haute bourgeois collections a few seasons ago—the tweeds, the capes, the pussybow blouses, the phenomenal tailoring. He just remixed them in ways that speak to how cool, young women actually dress today—a hoodie here, a crop top there; sweats here, a smattering of sequins there; blue denim here, bullion trim there.

All throughout, there was an alluring tension between the elevated and the everyday. Silvery, sinuous dresses were worn with grungy cardigans or mannish cardigans; full ball skirts with bombers jackets and baseball hats. Chic little shoulder bags and cool flat boots complete Slimane’s take on the new French girl look.

The brand is reportedly enjoying an uptick in sales and this collection, with its something-for-everyone ethos, was clearly engineered to build on that momentum and sell. Slimane is nothing if not a master merchandiser. Here, he showed his inimitable knack for taking pieces that are easy to understand, to wear, and to love, and jolting them with the gloss and energy of such a cool, new attitude that the familiar becomes simply irresistible.
