Relaxed elegance takes centerstage for the Italian house’s latest offering.

The green gorilla right at the centre of the sleek runway is the first hint that the Giorgio Armani Fall Winter 2021 collection would be a splendid one. The said simian appears to be an incarnation of a certain ‘Uri’, a large gorilla statue that decorates Mr Armani’s Milan apartment. With the hope that things are about to return to normal what with the COVID-19 vaccines, it seems timely that the Italian house is looking forward to a brighter future.

Exuberance is the flavour of the day, as ocean blue hues and organic prints bring to mind the natural world outdoors, for which we have developed a collective desire to return to. Playful ruffles of structured pleating bloom at the neck and peek out whimsically at the wrist or lapel jackets. 3D flowers are found on feminine blouses and slinky gowns, sometimes spontaneously forming a flower arrangement at the shoulder. There is also a sense of humour with the various cameos by Mr Armani’s portrait, which is printed or beaded on the front of dresses.

Masculine and boxy shapes hint of comfortable dressing post COVID. Pants are wide, in comfortable fabrics of silk and velour, while dresses are effortless and relaxed; athletic tropes are also in the mix with sporty hooded jackets and elevated sweatsuits. The ware on display are styled with brogues, sneakers, and smoking slippers. A year of lockdowns may have made many of us long for occasions to dress up in our finest again, but the taste for comfort and practicality that WFH life has given us may well be here to stay.
