As Versace’s Fall Winter 2021 collection video plays out, we get a hint of a new direction the brand is betting on this season. The collection begins with a few sharply tailored black ensembles with subtle prints on a bag, collar and gloves. Before we know it, the show transitions into a parade of head-to-toe monogrammed looks.

Donatella Versace’s new monogram La Greca is a rework of the brand’s iconic Greek Key symbol, which historically goes around the Medusa head logo. The new insignia now appears on coats, scarves and knits, and expertly woven onto glossy jacquard, and even etched around the chunky soles of futuristic looking sneakers. But the biggest highlight has to be the set for the runway — a giant multi-storey labyrinth where the trompe l’oeil design is projected into real life three dimensions (and then some).

For this collection, besides classic tailoring in the mod suits and slinky flared pants, as well as stunning gowns with layers of weightless chiffon, a nod to the brand’s signature high-octane Italian glamour, you can also expect puffer jackets, midriff baring monochrome two-piece sets, and micro-mini dresses in flashy colours and glitzy glitter, styled with neon-coloured monogrammed stockings as well as ultra-high platform boots and pumps that gave off 90s punk vibes.

As the camera pans out, we take in the sheer size of the set, which has been painted audaciously in gold. With models dispersed throughout the structure, it looks like an upscale Milanese apartment building playing host to a glamorous soiree. In the various ‘rooms’, models dance, fight over a handbag, or help each other get ready for a party. With a glimmer of hope that lockdowns, curfews and crowd restrictions are coming to en end, these are looks that beckon us to dream.
