When it comes to shopping for a new handbag, there are generally two camps. The first favours classic, time-honoured shapes that can be toted through fickle fashion seasons and taste changes. Then there’s the new Viv’ Choc pillow handbag from Roger Vivier, which treads a third path forward, one that blends the timeless with the contemporary. The draped shoulder bag with a chain strap and turnkey lock was conceived by creative director Gherardo Felloni as part of the brand’s Autumn/Winter 2023 collection.
As a creation of a storied label, the Viv’ Choc bag pays homage to the heritage and artisanal legacy of the French Maison. For starters, the romantic architecture combines sculptural leather with a sensual buckle with curved corners, reminiscent of the iconic Choc heel designed in 1959 by the brand’s late namesake designer. The silhouette then takes inspiration from a plethora of 20th-century design references and haute couture draping. Finally, each bag, available in black, blush and bordeaux, comprises over 70 individual pieces and features fully-customised hardware to create a purse that’s both decorative and practical.
Conversely, the Viv’ Choc bag seems to amalgamate two popular bag trends of the moment – the puffy, pillow style and the chain strap designs – into one. The former comes from the soft nappa lambskin construction, which has been worked like satin to create the bag’s puffed, rounded volume. The leather has been mounted by hand to create a sunray effect that stems from the crowning Roger Vivier buckle. Made of 3D resin or chrome, the buckle also satisfies those with a penchant for subtle logomania. Secondly, the detachable chain strap is made with links in opaque tonal shades or polished palladium, further elevating the design into one that has been coveted ever since its initial release.
