Magic was in the air as Valentino’s Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2023 collection, presented by creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli, floated around the historic grounds of Château de Chantilly Wednesday evening.
The “Un Château” collection was a masterclass in balancing simplicity with complexity – sophisticated silhouettes in an array of vibrant hues meeting seductive necklines and cutouts in the middle, but never competing with one another. While the dreamy collection didn't need the majestic backdrop of the château’s lush gardens, intricate sculptures or Renaissance flair, it surely did enhance every look making the roundabout on the runway, catching the light summer breeze and golden hour glow.
Accessories also played a major role throughout the collection, from shimmering flats adorned with large bows and feathered headpieces and gloves to oversized art deco earrings which supplemented the grandeur of the couture garments. It was a gorgeous play on the boundaries of couture, which, according to Piccioli, are none. The quintessential Piccioli paradox of making the complex appear simple was evident from the very first look, modelled by Kaia Gerber; a simple oversized white shirt and baggy denim trousers, complete with chandelier earrings to elevate the look. But underneath that 'denim' was actually a work of trompe l'oeil, a layer of silk gazar entirely embroidered with tiny pearl-like beads, which was later dyed in 80 hues of indigo to reproduce the actual look and feel of vintage denim.
