When you’re a supermodel looking to make a statement at the Met Gala (the Oscars of the fashion world, as it has been described), who do you turn to? For Chinese model Sun Fei Fei, the answer was clear: American designer Tory Burch.
Speaking of her inspiration behind the dress she made for Sun, Burch says, “We wanted to create beautiful dresses that reference the ball’s theme but not too literally. The palette—Fei Fei’s dress is black and actress Sasha Lane (whom the designer also dressed for the night)’s is white—nods to traditional religious clothing. It’s definitely a light reference.”

“Fei Fei is a classic beauty with an incredibly kind spirit. There is a sense of ease about her that I love. We wanted the dress to capture her effortless elegance,” the designer adds.
While Sun is no stranger to the Met Gala, she is still exhilarated by the process of creating a gown for the evening and to actually put on the finished product.
“The gown is so modern and dramatic. I loved how it highlighted my neck and the gown has a gorgeous train,” the model says. “Collaborating with Tory was such a privilege; she asked for my opinions and made modifications to the neckline to my needs. I have never worn a dress like this on the red carpet before and I was very excited to wear it to the gala.”

But it is still the small, intimate moments that really make the experience of collaborating with the American designer a truly winning experience for Sun. “One of my favorite parts of the evening is having a cocktail at her home before we depart for the gala,” she tells us. “Her apartment is gorgeous, but it’s comfortable at the same time. Photographer monographs are a passion of mine and I love the casual way Tory displays her book collection—you just want to pick one up and curl up on the couch and enjoy the book.”
